A sidewalk, littered with trash and neglected by all passersby, sat abandoned on 141st Street between St. Ann's and Crimmins. One day, a pickup truck dropped off a household fridge. That one white fridge started a revolution on that abandoned sidewalk. It was a community refrigerator -- filled with fresh, donated produce -- available for community members in need.
Bronx artists came to paint the fridge and a mural. News outlets came to cover the project. Community members volunteered to keep the fridge clean. Now, we run TWO community refrigerators -- and we're opening up three more by September and distributing to TWENTY more grassroots hubs, all serving community members who would otherwise go hungry. But you know what started it all? That one white fridge, dropped off on an abandoned sidewalk. That's the fridge that started a revolution.
What's sustained the revolution? Well, all of YOU! Summer interns, community members, community partners, neighbors with big cars and bigger hearts. We feel strongly that neighbors in our global village need to come together to help one another out. And so, on August 22nd, 1pm, we are celebrating the fridge that started it all. We are celebrating all of the people who have been a part of our transformation from a neglected piece of sidewalk to a vibrant community hub, source of life, and fountain of food for hundreds!
Feast with community members and partners, donors, interns, and volunteers alike! Help us celebrate the end of our inaugural summer internship program, our great friend Shirley's birthday, and our beautiful community that helped us transform this section of Bronx sidewalk into a vibrant neighborhood hub. We're so excited to host this sit-down, potluck brunch so EVERYONE can share in good food and good spirit! Come join us and save a seat, or, if you can't make it support from afar!
